LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Junior Bridgeman, a basketball star who led the University of Louisville to the Final Four and had a successful NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71. Following his time on the court, Bridgeman embarked on a prosperous business journey, investing in restaurants, publishing, and even the Bucks franchise.
A well-known figure in Louisville after his playing days, Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed Bridgeman's passing, describing him as a "kind, generous and groundbreaking legend" whom the city has lost.
“He was an All-American at U of L ... and a self-made billionaire,” Greenberg stated. “However, I will most remember Junior Bridgeman for his quiet and impactful assistance to those in need,” highlighting his deep love for family and unwavering support for the community.
Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, honored his friend as an accomplished businessman and devoted philanthropist who had a great affection for his alma mater and the city he cherished.
Media reports indicate that Bridgeman experienced a medical emergency at a Louisville hotel while attending a fundraising event on Tuesday.
Tributes have flooded in for a man who thrived both on the basketball court and in the corporate world.
