A$AP Rocky has been acquitted in his felony gun trial.
The verdict was delivered on February 18 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles. The 36-year-old rapper, actor, and designer, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, embraced his attorneys as the news broke, prompting celebrations in the courtroom. He had been facing a potential maximum sentence of 24 years in state prison.
His longtime partner, Rihanna, was in attendance for the verdict, as reported by Rolling Stone journalist Nancy Dillon. She had also garnered attention for being there during the closing statements, accompanied by the couple's two sons, RZA, 2, and Riot Rose, 1, on February 13.
Mayers's mother, Renee Black, and sister, Erika B, were seated in the front row during the verdict, as reported by Dillon.
Before the verdict was announced, defense attorney Joseph Tacopina expressed confidence to TMZ, stating that the case "should be a five-minute acquittal."
Mayers, who did not take the stand, faced two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm related to an incident with his high school friend Terell Ephron, known as A$AP Relli, on November 6, 2021, in Hollywood. The trial commenced on January 24 and was overseen by Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold.
This was not Rocky's first encounter with the law. At the age of 16, he was arrested on attempted murder charges and spent two weeks at Rikers Island in New York City before the charges were reduced and he was released. In 2019, he was also arrested for assault in Stockholm, Sweden, where he was jailed. Although he was found guilty in that highly publicized case, he had already been released and did not receive any additional jail time.
