Reagan National Airport is closed for the entire day following a commercial jet crash into the Potomac River.

A PSA Airlines plane collided midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter late Wednesday evening while the plane was preparing to land at Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the incident occurred around 9 p.m. as the aircraft was approaching Runway 33. The flight, operated by PSA for American Airlines, had departed from Wichita, Kansas, at approximately 5:20 p.m. American Airlines confirmed that there were 60 passengers and four crew members on board the CRJ700 series aircraft.

The Black Hawk helicopter was carrying three Army soldiers on a routine training flight, officials stated. As of now, it remains unclear how many individuals sustained injuries in the collision.

“We’re in rescue mode,” said Jack Potter, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, during a press conference at Reagan National. He also mentioned that 19 aircraft had to be diverted to Dulles International Airport, and Reagan National will remain closed until at least 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 30.

Earlier footage from a camera near the Kennedy Center captured the moment two sets of lights, resembling aircraft, appeared to explode in the sky.

WTOP’s Mike Murillo reported that first responders from across the D.C. area, including emergency personnel from Fairfax and Montgomery counties, were on the scene. “I’ve done this for 20 years — I have not seen this many first responders surrounding the entire Potomac River. It’s lit up on the D.C. side,” Murillo noted while reporting from Daingerfield Island. “They’re calling in every resource they have here tonight.”
